Magic Key - NeoFlash
Magic Key adapter enables you to run your own programs on Nintendo DS
by booting from a commercial DS game card (for authentication) and redirecting the NDS to a GBA Flash Cart (NeoFlash 512Mb or Flash Card) that holds your programs that is NDS ROMs.
Magic Key is an exceptionally well manufactured PassMe - nothing more and nothing less.
In addition to functioning as a nds PassMe / PassTrough - Magic Key will let you store Game Saves data for the game that you are playing to the Nintendo original cart that is plunged into Magic Key. For a DS game to store its Game Saves data correctly Nintendo DS game card in the MagicKey has to have the same Game Saves size as the NDS ROM you have on the neo gba flash card. For example to play WarioWare Touched! that has a 64Kbit save - you can use original Super Mario 64 DS. Keep in mind that when you save the game it will overwrite whatever you had saved on the card that is in NeoFlash Magic Key and so you can loose all your game progress (Mario SaveGame's and unlocked Mini-Games in this case).
Neo Flash Team has promised to tackle this save problem and hopefully we will be able to store Game Saves in GBA lash Cards SRAM memory or this could be solved by a device that can READ and BACUP save data to PC. I think that the second aproach is what NeoTeam is looking at.
GBA Mode - GBA ROMS = Magic Key not needed.
NeoFlash card can be used for GBA roms and all the emulators that have been created for GBA. When playing Gameboy Advance games you do not need to have the Magic Key in NDS. You can also use Neo GBA Flash Card on Gameboy Advance and GBA SP and of course you don't need Magic Key for these two.
FlashMe - Unofficial NDS Firmware hack / update
When you have Magic Key and with it the ability to run unsigned code in DS there is one thing that I would suggest you do to run homebrew games more easily - HACK your NDS!
FlashMe is a hacked version of original firmware.
Once you have flashed your Nintendo DS with this firmware update (FlashMe) you do not need to use PassMe (Magic Key) or WifiMe for non-commercial nds roms. You will still need NEO Magic Key for playing COMMERCIAL Nintendo DS Roms, but homebrew / public domain roms and even Nintendo DEMOS can be run without the PassMe or Neo Key sticking out of your DS
- The button combination A + B + X + Y will starts program from GBA cartridge.
(same if you have gamecode "PASS" or title "DSBooter" on the GBA cartridge)
- Backlight fades in.
- Remove RSA signature check for uploading and running NDS files.
Installing FlashMe NDS Firmware Hack
1. Open the battery lid.
2. Remove the square white/pink sticker from the left top corner.
3. Make contact between the two SL1 pads by putting a solid metal object in the hole. You could use a screw or screwdriver for example.
DO NOT SWITCH OFF OR REMOVE BATTERY UNTIL IT IS FINISHED! The process is only PAUSED when SL1 contact is lost.
Future patches/upgrades might not require this action. Please do not remove the battery or touch the other two holes!
Q: What is DS PassMe
A: PassMe is a device designed by Natrium42 based off of the first DS passthrough made by DarkFader using an FPGA dev kit. It redirects the DS to a GBA Flash cart, so you can run your own program on the Nintendo DS. It requires the use of a commercial DS cart (for authentication) and a GBA Flash cart (To hold your DS program) to work.
PassMe gives you the ability to test your programs on the DS hardware, not just in an emulator and allows you to download demo's from the internet and play them on your DS.
